Research: Types of Music Videos
1. Performative
The most common form of music video, this is the standard and is also the oldest. Music videos that feature the artist performing the song in a setting that reflects the mood of the song, such as the grounds of a country house, a recording studio, etc. A performance based video, has the advantage of being adaptable and working with any artist.
2. Narrative
These music videos take the form of a story being presented in the video. Rather than emphasizing on the artists perfomance, it highlights the themes of the song through a plot based on the lyrics and aesthetics of the song, or the artists inspiration for writing it.
3. Conceptual
Conceptual music videos have almost no relevance to the artist or lyrics themselves, and rather focus on visual aesthetics through implementation of multiple styles and techniques. The focus is to leave an impression on the audience rather than push a theme or narrative, not that a conceptual music video can't have a theme, as it helps carry the audience along the song.
4. Lyrical
A lyric video features the lyrics as text on screen as the key feature. Instead of showing a performance, it highlights the lyrics and uses various typographical features to highlight certain lyrics or stylise the video.
5. Animated
These music videos take the medium of animation to portray a theme or message, either using CGI, or traditional cell animation as examples. This allows for artists to use more artistic representation and stylistic freedom in representaion.
