Research: Types of Music Videos

  1. Performative The most common form of music video, this is the standard and is also the oldest. Music videos that feature the artist performing the song in a setting that reflects the mood of the song, such as the grounds of a country house, a recording studio, etc. A performance based video, has the advantage of being adaptable and working with any artist. 2. Narrative These music videos take the form of a story being presented in the video. Rather than emphasizing on the artists perfomance, it highlights the themes of the song through a plot based on the lyrics and aesthetics of the song, or the artists inspiration for writing it. 3. Conceptual Conceptual music videos have almost no relevance to the artist or lyrics themselves, and rather focus on visual aesthetics through implementation of multiple styles and techniques. The focus is to leave an impression on the audience rather than push a theme or narrative, not that a conceptual music video can't have a theme, as it helps...

Research: Representation in Music Videos

Music videos allow artists to represent marginalised groups and highlight struggles faced by minority social groups, or point out any issues faced by a social group in general. On the other hand, it can be argued that these videos can sometimes serve to perpetuate stereotypes and social stigmas that aren't accepted in wider society. For example, the video of Queens 1984 song "I Want To Break Free", which was considered controversial at the time of release because of the drag representation, which wasn't generally accepted in society. I want to make sure my music video is widely inclusive and creatively tackles social issues in a subtle and powerful way

Preliminary: Transitions Practice

Over summer, I made an Instagram account featuring edits of various fictional characters to songs, in order to practice before the A2 term. For example: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CwmIgBZL665/?igshid=MTZwMWdwM3B2eXJ3Ng== I took inspiration from a video that I saw online to get an idea for the theme I wanted to fit. I first had to find the style of footage and editing that fit the song I was using, in this case it was "Blue Hair" by TV Girl, a sad song in nature about losing a love interest. So I decided to use the scenes from the video game "The Legend of Zelda" which had similar themes Then I used the elements from the song (beats, bass, drums, etc) to dictate the pace of editing and invoke a sense of nostalgia with the filters and color grading While the posts I made were mostly different genres than what ultimately wanted to make, the preparation in principle was essentially the same as far as I observed.

Research: Understanding a Music Video Promotional Package

Music is a form of art, being the expression of a certain feeling by a single person whether personal or through empathy. For an art form already as expressive as it is, what is the point in a "music video". A music video is a combination of 2 different forms of art, being the art of music and the art of cinema. Cinema adds to a piece what the music itself can't.  To be more objective, according to Dictionary.com ( https://www.dictionary.com/browse/music-video ) a music video is "a commercial video featuring a performance of a popular song, often through a stylized dramatization by the performers with lip-syncing and special effects" Artists can use a music video to complete their vision of their art, when a song is released on audio platforms and gains its attention, a music video release can not only attract a new audience, it can bring a new experience for previous fans. Social media also serves as the main place for marketing, as modern platforms like Tiktok...

Introduction: Course Overview

In total, the course offers 4 avenues for practical tasks, being: Music Promotional Package Short Film Package Documentary Package Film Promotion Package Short Film Package: Requires students to create a short film of approximately 5 minutes, a website regarding its release, and a postcard advertisement for a (hypothetical) film festival. Documentary Package: We have to create an original, 5 minute long TV documentary, along with a website and a poster. Film Promo Package: The second most appealing task for me personally, where we have to create a package for a new film, including 2 trailers, accompanied by a website and a poster for the film. However, as previously mentioned in my introduction post, I'll be creating a music promotional package, more specifically a package promoting the release of an album, said package will include Music video between 2-4 minutes Social Media page Digipak (CD art, album cover, DVD cover, etc)

Introduction: Candidate Introduction

My name is Jibran Karamat, I am currently studying in A2 in Islamabad at the City School Capital Campus. As for what I'm studying in A2, specifically, I plan on creating the "Music Promotional Package" for my practical exam. While there were other options, such as the short film, I felt that making the Music Promotional Package would be a more exciting project considering we've made a short film already in AS. Here, I will be publishing my thoughts and the process that I will undertake throughout the term as I make the Music Promotional Package. I've been practicing film and media for a while now, so getting the opportunity to showcase my skills in the Cambridge exam is exciting, and I hope I can meet those high expectations.
